The Bird Base

The bird base is essential for the most origami dragon models out there, since it is the most common starting pattern. It is important to know how to fold this base by heart, without any instructions, because much instructions on how to origami generally start with “begin with bird base”. This is exactly why I’ve made this little tutorial. When folded, it looks like this:

So, let’s begin. Or, as they say in Japan, hajimemashou ne.

To begin all we need is a square sheet of paper of any size you want. If you don’t happen to have origami paper, it is not a good idea to start with a very small one, because standard paper is thicker then origami paper, and the thicker the paper is, the harder it becomes to fold it, when you have multiple layers of the paper. If you never tried folding origami, and you happened to pick a small square like one of these colorful squared sheets of paper for notes, you will understand what I am talking about in the next few minutes :)

Make two diagonal folds, and two perpendicular on the other side.

Step 01 Step 02
Step 03 Step 04

Bring the corners together, make sure they are all at the bottom of the square. Flatten the resulted square and make another fold.

Step 05 Step 06
Step 07 Step 08

Make the same fold on the other side, and fold the top triangle. Unfold last three steps, grab the top corner and drag it upwards.

Step 09 Step 10
Step 11 Step 12

Continue dragging until you have folded the complete figure shown below. You will have to reverse two folds at this process, since they point backwards. It’s ok. Turn the yet-to-be bird case to the other side and repeat the whole process.

Step 13 Step 14
Step 15 Step 16

Congratulations! You have completed the bird case! **Now you can proceed to folding origami dragon in the next post :)
